Limnophila aromatica is a truly beautiful stem plant that is native to south-east Asia where it flourishes in watery environments such as rice fields. It is characterised by its narrow green leaves which are purple-red underneath. As with most other red plants, the colour depends on the intensity of available light. CO2 injection will significantly hasten growth, and a nutrient rich substrate is a must. When grown emersed in open topped aquaria, the leaves will be of different shape (shown inset in above photo) and the plant will produce pink-purple flowers above the water line.
