Distribution of Betta Patoti
Type locality is the Mangar River some 25 km from the seaport of Balikpapan City, East Kalimantan (Kalimantan Timur) province, Indonesian Borneo but the species apparently ranges into Kutai Kartanegara Regency to the north. Colour pattern differs depending on collection locality, with populations around Balikpapan exhibiting blackish body bars and those from further north appearing more reddish. One form, said to be collected near Samarinda, has a greenish iridescence to the body.
