Order: Perciformes
Family: Osphronemidae
Distribution of Betta Enisae
This species is known only from parts of the River Kapuas basin, Kalimatan Barat (West Kalimantan), Borneo, Indonesia. It’s range extends east and slightly northwards from Sanggau as far as Putussibau, the type locality being within the River Santik watershed.
Populations from different localities have been observed to exhibit differences in colouration, patterning, and in some cases morphometrics. In order to maintain accuracy and preserve pure bloodlines the fish are therefore often labelled with collection details, e.g., Putussibau, Sentarum, etc.
Habitat of Betta Enisae
Typically inhabits cool, flowing streams and associated pools in forest swamps. These are usually shaded from the sun, the dense canopy of branches above meaning very little light penetrates the water surface. Marginal vegetation also tends to grow thickly.
The water itself is typically stained with humic acids and other chemicals released by decaying organic material. The dissolved mineral content is negligible, pH quite low and substrate composed mainly of fallen leaves, branches and submerged tree roots.
